Lock Rekeying in Los Angeles

Rekeying changes the inside of your lock so old keys stop working, without replacing the hardware. It is a practical first step after a move, a lost key or a change of staff.

Cutaway illustration of a pin tumbler lock being rekeyed

Inside a pin tumbler lock is a row of small pins that line up only when the right key is inserted. When we rekey, we replace those pins with a new set to match a new key. The lock body, handle and finish stay the same.

When to rekey

  • You have moved into a home or rental and do not know who has keys.
  • A key has been lost or stolen.
  • A tenant, roommate, cleaner or contractor no longer needs access.
  • An employee has left your business.
  • You want one key for several doors.

How rekeying works

  1. Remove the cylinderThe technician takes the cylinder out of the lock.
  2. Change the pinsThe old pins are replaced with a new combination for a new key.
  3. Test and refitThe cylinder goes back in and is tested with the new key.
  4. Cut your keysWe cut as many new keys as you need on site.

Rekey or replace?

Rekeying usually costs less than new locks when your existing hardware is in good condition. A lock change is better when the lock is worn or damaged, when you want a higher-security or smart lock, or when you want a new style.

Keying alike and master keys

Rekeying is also the moment to simplify your key ring. We can key several doors alike so one key opens them all, or for landlords and businesses, set up a master key system.

Frequently asked questions

Is rekeying as secure as new locks?

It makes the old keys useless, which is the main goal after a move or lost key. It does not change the lock's strength; for that, consider a higher-security lock.

Can you rekey a lock without the key?

Yes, although it may take a little longer. We will open the lock first, then rekey it.

Can you rekey smart locks?

Many smart locks have a key cylinder that can be rekeyed. The electronic codes are changed separately in the lock's settings.
